Campus Message 03.12.16

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

This last week was a challenging one for our campus. Yesterday’s rally and protests attracted thousands of individuals who sought to make their voices heard through the political process. We fully supported the rights of all groups to assemble and express their political views and worked hard with the organizers to facilitate the events.

I want to thank our students and other members of the UIC community who participated peacefully in these events. UIC strives to create an environment where opposing points of view can be heard and debated and we expect our students to conduct themselves accordingly.

The UIC Police Department cooperated with all appropriate law enforcement agencies to address the security concerns associated with this event. I want to thank Chief Booker and the men and women of the UIC Police Department, the Chicago Police Department, the Illinois State Police and the Secret Service for their efforts to protect everyone’s safety and constitutional rights.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Amiridis
Chancellor

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

To continue the University of Illinois Strategic Planning Initiative, each of the three campuses will follow up the town halls from last fall with a second round of town hall meetings in March. This will provide the UIC community another opportunity to participate in this very important process.

We will hold a town hall meeting in Rockford on Thursday, March 10th from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. in classroom A-254 at 1601 Parkview Avenue, College of Medicine at Rockford. The town hall will be webcast live at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ2-jr5m_pzPN2UkUi-bYjA

Campus Message 03.05.16

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:

Many of you have communicated with me or with other members of the administration regarding the scheduling of an event in the Pavilion on Friday, March 11 by the Trump campaign. Consistent with its role as a public university, the University of Illinois at Chicago is not endorsing, sponsoring or supporting any candidate for political office. At the same time, it has been our standard practice for decades to rent available space on campus to any political candidate when requested. As a result, we have a long history of campaign events on campus, and no legal basis to exclude any candidate because of the views he or she expresses.

UIC’s core values of freedom, equality and social justice for all, regardless of race, religion, national origin, disability status or sexual orientation, are deeply rooted in our diverse community and not endangered by the presence of any political candidate on campus. We encourage public and civic engagement by all members of our University and we endorse the idea that the answer to speech that one does not like or finds offensive is more speech and not censorship.

We welcome the diverse sentiments expressed by our students, faculty, staff, alumni and the neighboring communities regarding the upcoming political event. And we want to ensure everyone that security plans are in place to address the safety of our campus community during this event.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Amiridis
Chancellor
