Strategic priorities document outlines plans for future

UIC released its Strategic Priorities document Wednesday, which outlines a five-year plan to enhance student support and build on the university’s national and global reputation.

The document, “Leveraging Our Strengths to Shape the Future,” is the culmination of a year of work by the UIC Strategic Priorities Committee, which was chaired by Michael Pagano, dean of the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs, and Robert Winn, director of the Cancer Center and associate vice chancellor for community based practice. Campus Message 09.21.16

Dear Colleagues,

I write to provide you with an update about the budget situation at UIC. As you know, we continue to operate without a full state budget having received state funds only through two “stop-gap” appropriations this calendar year, one in April and one in July. In fiscal year 2016 (FY16) we received 27 percent of our fiscal year 2015 appropriation. We had anticipated a significant reduction at the beginning of FY16 and self-imposed an internal budget cut (corresponding to a 20 percent reduction in state funds). Under this assumption we expected to receive $168.7 million from the state, exclusive of the Hospital, but we only received $47.1 million. Moreover, we did not receive any state funding for special line-item projects. As a result, at the end of FY16 (i.e. June 30, 2016), our budget shortfall from the state was more than $120 million despite the 20 percent reduction implemented. In July, the Legislature provided only partial funding for the current fiscal year (FY17). Read more…
