Campus Message 07.20.17

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Earlier this month, I shared with you the news that a new state budget was approved for the first time in over two years. We remain extremely grateful for the budget we have been provided. While we must manage our remaining fiscal challenges carefully and strategically, we are certainly much better off today than we were a month ago.

We are still in the process of evaluating the full implications of the new budget, however, following are some details we can confirm:

  • We have received 2016/2017 funding for the Monetary Award Program (MAP) totaling over $32 million in tuition and fee awards for 8,500 undergraduate students. These grants are extremely important to our neediest students.
  • UIC will receive additional state operating support for FY17 approximately equal to our FY15 adjusted funding level. As you recall, last year we had to sequester our collective carry-forward balances to cover the significant deficit caused by the reduced state support in FY16. The FY17 funding will allow us to return approximately 39 percent of the sequestered carryforward funds to the original accounts within the next 2-3 months.
  • Due to the funding UIC will receive from the state for FY17 and FY18, we are reducing our originally planned FY18 budget reductions to 3.25 percent from 5 percent. Read more…

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

Earlier this year, the UIC Master Plan Advisory Committee provided recommendations — “Envisioning Our Future: 2017-2027” — to improve UIC facilities and grounds over the next decade. Our capital infrastructure must reflect the quality and impact of this institution if we are to achieve our educational, research and engagement goals; attract the best faculty and staff; and provide much-needed facilities for students. The first draft master plan was presented to internal and external stakeholders who provided thoughtful and constructive feedback. I expect the process to be completed this fall. In the meantime, I am pleased to let you know that two of the projects featured in the early discussions will be moving forward during the current academic year and you will begin to see construction activity on campus in the next several months. Legislators end state’s record-setting budget impasse

Lawmakers ended the state’s record-setting budget stalemate July 6 by passing a spending plan that will provide full-year funding for the University of Illinois System for the current fiscal year.

The resolution, which was reached after members of the General Assembly voted to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s vetoes of the budget package, is the state’s first budget plan — and UIC’s first full-year budget appropriation —since fiscal 2015. Fiscal 2018 began July 1.

“Today’s legislative action to pass a balanced budget for the state is a great step forward for higher education in Illinois and for UIC,” UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis wrote in a campus announcement last week. “I am relieved and full of optimism as we look to the future.” Read more…

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

Today’s legislative action to pass a balanced budget for the state is a great step forward for higher education in Illinois and for UIC. I am relieved and full of optimism as we look to the future.

I would like to thank the members of the Illinois General Assembly in both parties who stepped up and voted for a budget that provides operating funds for our public universities and MAP funds for our students. I will reach out to all state senators and representatives who supported higher education and express my gratitude to them for their efforts to end the impasse. I urge you to do the same with your local elected officials. Read more…

Campus Message 07.05.17

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

We are monitoring and closely evaluating the budget decisions in Springfield. As I write, the Illinois House of Representatives is tentatively scheduled to take up the Governor’s veto of the budget tomorrow. We will communicate to the campus community regarding the impact of the final outcome.

I am hopeful that we will have a resolution and a budget that provides much-needed funding for Illinois’ public universities and restoration of MAP funding for our students.
