Campus Message 01.13.17
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. John Coumbe-Lilley as the Faculty Athletic Representative effective January 1, 2017. Dr. Coumbe-Lilley will continue to serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition in the College of Applied Health Sciences.
The Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) serves to promote academic integrity and institutional control of intercollegiate athletics, to facilitate the integration of academic and athletic components within the university community, and to enhance the student-athlete experience. The FAR will focus on assuring the academic integrity of our athletics program and to promote the welfare of our student athletes. In this role, Dr. Coumbe-Lilley will serve as a member of the Chancellor’s Athletic Advisory Committee and as liaison to the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.
Dr. Coumbe-Lilley is an alumnus of UIC having received his PhD in 2007 in Education Philosophy and his masters in Sports Psychology in 2002. He received his bachelor of arts with honors in Business, Sports and Recreation Management from Manchester Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. Dr. Coumbe-Lilley brings great strengths to this role, including his credentials as a USA Triathlon Level 1 Coach. He has taught courses at UIC focused on sports health, injury and recovery and other subjects for over ten cumulative years, and he will be a tremendous asset to our growing athletics programs.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Sylvia Furner, Associate Professor Emerita in the School of Public Health, who most recently served as FAR for UIC athletics. She oversaw our sports programs and our student athletes during a time of increased university wide enrollment and an expansion of our Intercollegiate Athletics programs, and UIC is fortunate to have benefitted from her experience. Additionally, I would like to thank Dean Jerry Bauman, Chair of the search committee, and all the members whose efforts provided an excellent roster of candidates.
Please join me in welcoming John in his new role at UIC. I also encourage everyone to join us at UIC athletic events to help us cheer on our Flames!
