Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
On Wednesday, March 15, we alerted the campus community that offensive and anti-Semitic posters were found on campus. Unfortunately, and sadly, additional posters have been found on campus and we write once again to reaffirm that these actions do not reflect the values we hold as a community. As stated in our earlier communication, UIC strives to be an environment free of discrimination in all of its forms and we strongly encourage everyone in our community to respect these principles.
Much of the vitality of our campus is because of the diversity of thought and perspectives that exist here. The same laws that allow for that vitality also allow for speech that can be offensive and create discomfort and even fear. Though there are some exceptions to the First Amendment’s protections, they are highly circumscribed and not available to prevent or punish the posting on public bulletin boards of ideas that many find deeply offensive.
