Campus Message 05.19.17

Dear Colleagues:

Jim Schmidt, Director of Athletics, recently announced that he will retire from UIC on August 1, 2017, after 36 years of dedicated service building our athletic department. Jim is the longest serving athletic director in UIC’s history, as well as, within the Horizon League. During his tenure, Jim was instrumental in the development of several Flames programs that have consistently experienced regional and national success. UIC Flames have advanced to NCAA postseason competition on 49 occasions, while amassing a total of 80 conference championships. In 2015, Jim was named as the Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

We are pleased to inform you of the search for the Director of Athletics. The search committee will be chaired by J. Rex Tolliver, Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and will be assisted by Parker Executive Search in our recruiting efforts. Read more…


Campus Message 05.17.17

Dear Faculty and Staff,

In August of 2016, President Killeen appointed the University Alignment Implementation Team to make recommendations about moving certain organizational functions to the universities from the central university system. As a result of that process, the first phase of implementation will be to transfer three units from the University of Illinois central administration to UIC.

Effective July 1, 2017, UIC Purchasing and the Office of Business and Financial Services (OBFS) Budget Office will report to Janet Parker, Associate Chancellor for Budget and Resource Planning, and the OBFS Post Award Grants & Contracts will report to Mitra Dutta, Vice Chancellor for Research. The Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence (CAPE) Award, established in 1988, recognizes the demonstrated excellence of academic professional staff members and affirms our highest regard for the contributions of this important community to UIC. This year, six academic professionals will receive the CAPE Award, which provides a $1,000 permanent increase to the honoree’s salary and a $2,000 one-time cash award. This is a reminder that your participation is welcome in several upcoming events when a peer review team from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) visits UIC on April 24-25. The site visits are part of the process to reaffirm our accreditation.

To ensure that all members of the UIC community will be able to participate, there will be several opportunities to share comments and feedback with the reviewers:

Open discussion for faculty members (full-time, part-time, and clinical)
Tuesday, April 25, 9:15-10:15 a.m., Illinois Room A in Student Center East.

Drop-in sessions. These are open sessions for members of the UIC community who would like to speak with the peer review team or ask questions about the accreditation process. Appointments are not necessary; feel free to stop by.
Monday, April 24, 10:45-11:45 a.m., Room 2650 in University Hall.
Monday, April 24, 1:00-2:00 p.m., Room 2650 in University Hall.

Last year, the UIC Master Plan Advisory Committee began the process of formulating a 10-year plan to help UIC “Escape Forward” through strategic development of campus facilities and grounds. I am pleased to announce that the committee has developed a draft plan titled, Envisioning Our Future: 2017-2027 Plan, that is now ready for input from all campus stakeholders. I have asked the co-chairs of the committee, Fernando Howell, Director of Capital Planning and Project Management, and Dave Taeyaerts, Associate Vice Chancellor of Learning Environments & Campus Architect, to present the draft plan before the end of the semester at two town hall meetings to gather your feedback. State of University of Illinois at Chicago

In a formal address describing the “State of the University of Illinois at Chicago” March 29, Chancellor Michael Amiridis showcased the achievements of UIC leaders, scholars and researchers over the past year and shared his aspirations for reaching new heights of excellence in the future.

“We gather today in the midst of shadows cast from a dysfunctional budgetary and political environment to shine a bright light on the magnificent accomplishments of our students, our faculty and our staff,” Amiridis announced during his talk in the UIC Forum.

He reflected on the academic year, highlighting the record-breaking enrollment numbers set last fall despite state budget uncertainties.

“We are grateful for their vote of confidence and remain steadfast in our commitment to access and excellence,” he said.

Amiridis also noted that UIC has proposed to continue an in-state tuition freeze for the third straight year.

“The success of our students has always been and will continue to be our first priority,” he said. Read more…

Campus Message 03.21.17

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

On Wednesday, March 15, we alerted the campus community that offensive and anti-Semitic posters were found on campus. Unfortunately, and sadly, additional posters have been found on campus and we write once again to reaffirm that these actions do not reflect the values we hold as a community. As stated in our earlier communication, UIC strives to be an environment free of discrimination in all of its forms and we strongly encourage everyone in our community to respect these principles.

Much of the vitality of our campus is because of the diversity of thought and perspectives that exist here. The same laws that allow for that vitality also allow for speech that can be offensive and create discomfort and even fear. Though there are some exceptions to the First Amendment’s protections, they are highly circumscribed and not available to prevent or punish the posting on public bulletin boards of ideas that many find deeply offensive. Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Today, anti-Semitic posters were found on campus that defame, insult and negatively portray Jewish members of our campus community. Such actions do not reflect the values we hold as a community. Acts that invoke hatred or violence toward members of our community will not be tolerated on our campus.

This event makes it necessary for us to reaffirm our collective commitment to two fundamental principles: the first is the importance of tolerance, inclusion and diversity to our university community and the second is the right to free expression that ensures we are a place of open inquiry and learning. Both of these principles are fundamental to who we are and what we aspire to be as a university. Read more…
