Campus Message 01.09.17
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I hope you have enjoyed your holiday and I am delighted to welcome everyone back to UIC!
This past December, UIC held its second university wide commencement ceremonies, one for our undergraduates and one for our masters and doctoral students who completed their degrees in the summer or fall 2016 terms. We were honored to have two distinguished keynote speakers. Ambassador Ivo Daalder, President of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs spoke to our masters and PhD graduates, and Oscar Munoz, Chief Executive Officer at United Airlines, spoke to our undergraduates. UIC conferred nearly 1,400 degrees in two ceremonies where our graduates were joined by over 7,000 of their family members and friends.
UIC also initiated a new tradition by inviting back our first Golden Graduates, members of the Class of 1966 who graduated 50 years ago from what then were two separate campuses – the Circle Campus graduates and the Medical Center graduates. It was an honor to welcome back loyal and engaged alumni to their university and to watch them march during the commencement ceremonies side by side with our 2016 graduates.
As we turn our sights to 2017 and the spring semester, Provost Poser will continue to host the conversations that began last fall – a series of topic discussions about the challenges we face as individuals and as a country. These conversations have brought our community together to learn about current issues in context, and provide a forum where diverse viewpoints can be heard, and where we – students, faculty and staff – can engage in discussion. Please check your UIC email for these upcoming events.
There is also plenty of recent news to make us all proud. Please visit the UIC website to read some of the latest on our research, accomplishments, and other news that will remind you that you are a member of one of the top public research universities in the nation. (www.uic.edu)
I also encourage all of you to join us at UIC Athletic events and help cheer on our Flames. For games and schedules please visit http://www.uicflames.com/. Students get in for free but don’t forget your IDs.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude and appreciation to all of our faculty members and staff for everything they do to support our students’ educational experience, and the research, service and care they provide at UIC and beyond.
Best wishes to everyone for a successful Spring Semester.
