Campus Message 05.20.16
Dear members of the UIC community,
I write to you today to announce the retirement of Dr. Barbara Henley, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, effective Aug. 31. As the longest-serving vice chancellor at UIC, Barbara has served our University and our students with distinction for 19 years. She will be greatly missed by her colleagues and by the students and graduates she has mentored during her career.
Barbara has been a passionate advocate for UIC and its students, working tirelessly to enhance the student experience and provide a welcoming, supportive and stimulating learning environment. Under her leadership, the UIC Experience was created to engage students in urban, intellectual and community-building experiences outside of the classroom.
During her tenure, the campus expanded services and facilities to support student residential and commuter life with the construction of new residence halls, new recreation facilities, and the UIC Forum; renovations in housing and student centers; and the opening of an award-winning Commuter Student Resource Center and a new Student Veterans Resource Center.
As a native Chicagoan and an alumna of UIC, Barbara knows first-hand the importance of UIC’s public mission and our commitment to provide our students with a diverse, world-class education. I want to thank Barbara for her leadership and congratulate her on her many accomplishments. She will be greatly missed.
I am pleased to announce that Rex Tolliver, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Director of Campus Auxiliary Services, has agreed to serve as Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs effective Sept. 1, pending approval of the Board of Trustees. I am confident that under Rex’s leadership Student Affairs will continue to serve our students and the campus with great success. During the next few months, Barbara and Rex will work closely together to ensure a seamless transition.
Please join me in wishing Barbara a wonderful retirement as she starts a new chapter in her life. We will all have the opportunity to honor Barbara for her contributions at a farewell reception to be held in late August.
