Campus Message 07.06.17

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

Today’s legislative action to pass a balanced budget for the state is a great step forward for higher education in Illinois and for UIC. I am relieved and full of optimism as we look to the future.

I would like to thank the members of the Illinois General Assembly in both parties who stepped up and voted for a budget that provides operating funds for our public universities and MAP funds for our students. I will reach out to all state senators and representatives who supported higher education and express my gratitude to them for their efforts to end the impasse. I urge you to do the same with your local elected officials.

I know that the lack of a state budget has had an enormous impact on each of you – faculty, staff and students alike. I want to thank you for your efforts and endurance over the last two years. Your hard work, trust and support for UIC made it possible for us not only to remain standing, but advance as an institution during a very difficult period. Now we can focus on what we do best: serving our students and the citizens of Illinois.

While we are not out of woods entirely and we must address the FY2016 deficit, we are in a much better position today than we were yesterday. I will communicate with you as quickly as possible once we know the exact figures for our campus and can determine the effect on our budget.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Amiridis
Chancellor
